Moodle X Zoom

New functions Online Class – Zoom Moodle Block are set up under Moodle to facilitate teachers to arrange online classes for their Moodle courses via Zoom. Staff and students can join Zoom meetings for their Moodle courses directly via the Block through a single click.

Notes:

  1. Only teachers and Moodle Course Administrators who are HKU staff can create meeting under the Online Class – Zoom Moodle Block

  1. The one who created the meeting link will be the meeting host who will be granted with the in-meeting control rights. After the meeting link is created, other teachers and Moodle Course Administrator can also join and start the meeting.

  1. The meeting link created is for recurrent meetings which means it can be used for multiple classes throughout the Moodle course.

A. Staff

Account activation 

  1. Go to https://hku.zoom.us to activate your HKU Portal account for using Zoom.  After logged in, a Zoom license will be assigned under your account and you can start using Zoom to create and join Zoom meetings.  (Note: Only HKU staff and student accounts can register for using this service.  Departmental accounts are not accepted.)

  1. Alternatively, you will see the following message under your Moodle course if the system detects your account has not been activated for using Zoom.  Click Activate Zoom Account.           

First-time login to create Zoom meeting link

  1. Click Create Meeting to create the Zoom meeting link for your Moodle course.  The one who creates the meeting will be assigned as the meeting host.        

Start a meeting

  1. Click Start the meeting to start the Zoom meeting.  A new window will be opened for joining the Zoom meeting.

Disable online class block

    If you prefer not to use "Online Class - Zoom" for the course, you may hide the block as shown below.

  1. Select Turn editing on to enable course page editing mode

  2. Click block setting button and choose Hide Online Class - Zoom block

Create Zoom Meeting for > 300 participants

    If a class is having more than 300 students, teacher may request for the license for a Zoom Large Meeting option which can support up to 500 participants.

  1. To request for Zoom Large Meeting option, please send an email elearningteam@hku.hk including your Moodle course name, course number and primary instructor’s HKU Portal UID (no departmental Portal UID will be accepted.)  The cost is US$50/month/host. 
  1. Upon receipt, ITS will add the Zoom Large Meeting option into the primary instructor’s HKU Portal account.
  1. The primary instructor please follow the instructions to create a Zoom class with size over 300.

 

 

 

       4.The primary instructor please disable the “Online Class – Zoom Moodle block on the right by the following steps:

  1.  Select Turn editing on to enable course page editing mode.
  2. Click the block setting button and choose Hide Online Class - Zoom block.  

 

B. Students and Other Participants

Join a meeting

  1. Locate the Online Class – Zoom Moodle Block of a Moodle course.

  1. Click Start the Meeting to join your class on Zoom.

If the meeting link is not available in the Online Class – Zoom Moodle block, please contact the course offering department for assistance.

Notes:

[1] To disable the share screen function, the host can click the Security button and turn off the Share Screen function to disallow participants to share their screens. Similarly, for the waiting room and chat function.
