Moodle Grade Statistics Chart is an integrated statistics chart application of student’s performance in the courses on the HKU Moodle platform. This tool provides a convenient and efficient way for the teachers to know the participation of individual students as well as overall participation trends of the whole class. Teachers may also use this tool to have different perspectives for the correlation of student’s participation and Moodle assignment grades.

Teacher can access the Moodle Grade Statistics Chart webpage through the following hyperlinks in the “My eLearning” tab of HKU Portal.

In the Moodle Grade Statistics Chart webpage, there are four tabs of different statistics chart, namely:
- Bar Charts – Over all Grades, Views, Posts
- Bar Charts – Grades per Assignment
- Scatter Plot – Overall Grades vs Clicks
- Scatter Plot – Overall Grades vs Views/Posts
- Least-Performing Students
B.1 Bar Charts – Overall Grades, Views, Posts
There are three bar charts in this webpage:
- Student Overall Moodle Grades
Show individual student’s overall grade in the Moodle course in the descending order
- Moodle Course Views Count
Show the student’s views count in the Moodle course in the descending order
- Moodle Course Posts Count
Show the student’s posts count in the Moodle course in the descending order
The three bar charts are highly interactive, such that, when the teacher points at a particular student’s bar in the one of the charts, the corresponding student’s bars in the other two bar charts will be highlighted. In this way, the teacher can quickly know the individual student’s Moodle grades and the participation in the Moodle courses.
In addition, on the side bar on left hand side of the webpage, there are four buttons which link to Moodle Student Performance by Percentile webpage. The Moodle Student Performance by Percentile webpage displays a list of students within the respective percentile of the Moodle overall grade. B.2 Bar Charts – Grades per Assignment
This webpage displays a list of all assignments in the Moodle courses, with student’s grades in the assignments. The bar charts would be useful to track the student’s progress in the course, and overall student performance of the class in the particular assignment.
B.3 Scatter Plot – Overall Grades vs Clicks
This scattered plot shows the student’s overall Moodle grade against the number of student’s clicks in the Moodle course. The student assignment grades detail can be displayed by pointing the points using the mouse. Dragging the mouse in the scattered plot can zoom in the selected area.
4 or 10 percentile regions can be selected from the drop down box on top of the page.
Number of students in each percentile range is shown in the legend. By clicking the percentile range text in the legend, the points in the scattered chart of that particular percentile range would be show or hide. The hyperlink of the number of students links to the Moodle Student Performance by Percentile webpage. B.4 Scatter Plots – Overall Grades vs Views/Posts
There are two scatter plots in the webpage:

In addition, on the side bar on left hand side of the webpage, there are four buttons which link to Moodle Student Performance by Percentile webpage. The Moodle Student Performance by Percentile webpage displays a list of students within the respective percentile of the Moodle overall grade. This webpage displays the student grades for all of the assignments in the Moodle courses, with least-performing students highlighted in different colours. This chart aims to help teachers identifying the five least-performing students in a Moodle course based on their overall Moodle grade.
When clicking the row of the table or the bar in chart of the five least-performing students, the chart showing the class ranking of the selected student in each assignment would be shown. The chart shows the performance trend and progress of the least performing students at a glance. Teachers can get the idea of how the student does comparing with classmates in each assignment by the class ranking shown.
If teacher wants to know the students’ performance on a specific assignment, he can click the Assignment name in the class raking chart, then the selected chart of the assignment would be shown. This helps teachers to switch between charts easily.
C. Upload student grade file function
Teachers may have grades of activities (e.g. paper exam) other than Moodle activities. By uploading their own student grade file, grades other than Moodle activities can be included in the statistics charts. It helps teachers to get the full picture of students’ performance in the whole course.
The accepted file type for statistics charts generation should be in .csv format. The file should contain a column “Student No” which stores the 10-digit student number, and a column “Overall grade” which stores the overall grade (course total) of student.
Student grade file template or Moodle gradebook can be download through the “Download” tab. (See section C.3)
To upload the student grade file, click the link “To upload / manage student grade file” on the top right of the Moodle Grade Statistics Chart webpage.
Click “Browse” button, choose the prepared student grade file from your computer, click “Upload” button to upload.
Preview of the upload file would be shown. Click “Confirm” to upload.
Click “Back” button to view the statistics charts generated based on the uploaded student grade file.
C.3 Download student grade file template
To download student grade file template, click the link “To upload / manage student grade file” on the top right of the Moodle Grade Statistics Chart webpage.
Click the “Download” tab.
Teachers can click the link “Student grade file template” to download a template containing student numbers, student names and student emails. To prepare for statistics chart generation, teachers can add columns of grades to it, including the “Overall grade” column.
Teachers can click the link “Moodle gradebook” to download a student grade file containing grades in the Moodle gradebook. To prepare for statistics chart generation, teachers can add columns of grades of activities other than Moodle activities to it.
